Antonio Conte’s first season in-charge at Stamford Bridge ended in complete and utter success and the Blues fans here in the Tavern couldn’t be happier!
Chelsea romped to the Premier League title during the Italian’s first year at the club and he’s laid some seriously promising foundations for what looks to be some successful years down at the Bridge.
But it didn’t go Conte’s way all season long and the Italian has been quick to admit that things could have been very different indeed, especially after one particular result earlier on this campaign.
The result in question? The 3-0 defeat to Arsenal back in September, which left our Chelsea-mad barman absolutely reeling all those months ago.
And according to the Mirror, Conte would have been more than happy to settle for fourth after that surprising result.
Conte said: “It was very difficult to think about celebrating winning the league after the Arsenal defeat”.
“At the start of the season, if you’d said we could qualify for the Champions League, I’d have signed for that. Then I found great players, and we were able to change our season,” he told the Mirror.
So with things having gone so smoothly in the end, how bad could things have been if the Blues didn’t bounce back from that result?
Well, on this occasion, I guess we’d have never found out.
Blues fans- do you remember that result? How were you feeling about the title race back then? Leave your thoughts in the comments below!
