Chelsea boss has faith in rumoured Barcelona target

Juan MataMetro have some reassuring news for Chelsea fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern today as they note that Jose Mourinho has given his full backing to Juan Mata.

Our landlord is rushed off his feet serving the packed bar, but he still has time to stop and tell us about Jose Mourinho’s latest quotes.

As we all know, Mata has been on the fringes of the Special One’s side – something of a massive shock given he has been nothing short of the heartbeat behind the Chelsea side over the past two seasons.

Links to Barcelona and also Manchester United – amongst others – have been flying around the tavern more often than the two for one shots on a weekend and now Jose Mourinho has tried to calm the storm and even reassure the midfielder about his future. He claimed: “He’s in the same plans as all the others.

“He’s a player I like a lot, he’s a player I trust a lot and he’s a player who will fight for positions like everybody else.”

Mata will of course see this as a huge plus and could well take this as an assurance that he will be staying at the club – and hopefully not have to endure constant rumours and speculation until January.

Mourinho also spoke about the Spanish international’s chances of playing week in, week out and added: “He’s a player who will sometimes start the match and sometimes be on the bench – hopefully not – but with so many matches coming consecutively I will make strange decisions in your eyes.

“I will think about the matches that are coming, sometimes I will leave out an important player because I want him ready for the next match.”

As one of our punters quips, it is fair to say that Chelsea will have a huge number of games from now until the end of the season and at some point, Mata will get his chance.

Will Mourinho bring Mata back into the side? Let us know your thoughts below.
