Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has confirmed that the club have made an offer for Porto defender Alvaro Pereira, though the former Porto boss has claimed to be “not very confident” that a deal will be made between the two clubs.
Chelsea were reported to have made a bid in the region of £16m earlier this week, though according to the Guardian, the Portuguse side are holding out for a fee much closer to the €26m release clause in the player’s contract.
The latest offer to be tabled by Chelsea is believed to be in excess of €20m, though the club are reportedly unwilling to meet Porto’s valuation, hence the skepticism from Villas-Boas himself. After being somewhat seemingly hesitant to enter the transfer market in its early stages, the Chelsea boss has been extremely busy bringing the likes of Oriol Romeu, Romelu Lukaku, and most recently Juan Mata, over the last couple of weeks.
However, aside from the youth or ‘fringe’ players at the club, Chelsea have only really parted ways with Yuri Zhirkov, and Pereira’s signing would require at least one or two departures from Stamford Bridge in order for Chelsea to meet the Premier League’s 25-man rule.
Pereira, 25, is generally deployed as a full-back at Porto though he has also demonstrated his ability of the left side of midfield on several occasions. With Ashley Cole’s future at Chelsea never in doubt, speculation over the future of Florent Malouda has intensified with Juventus reportedly showing interest in the 31-year-old.
Andre-Villas Boas appears to be keen on bringing in fresh talent to Stamford Bridge, especially with the likes of Malouda, Anelka, Drogba, and Lampard all entering the final stages of their careers. Pereira could provide Chelsea with the width they have been lacking in recent seasons, though a change in formation would surely be necessary in order to for him to do so.
One thing seems certain: Chelsea fans can fully expect an exciting end to the transfer window. No change there then
