There is a huge sense of deja vu here in the Football Transfer Tavern with the latest claim from Metro.
The publication report that Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has been playing down reports that Wayne Rooney is set to once again be a target for the Blues.
Mourinho is a well known fan of the forward and did try and lure him to Stamford Bridge upon his return in the summer, yet now it seems that the manager is once again repeating the same mind games.
Mourinho claimed: “We play Man United in a few days, I don’t think it’s nice to speak about a Man United player.
“You have to ask the player and Man United because Man United has a contract, so I think you have to speak with David [Moyes] and the player.”
As our landlord pauses to turn and offer his opinion, one of our punters butts in and notes that this is exactly what Mourinho said when Chelsea faced United at the start of the season when the transfer window was still open!
The Blues are in dire need of a forward – of that point there is no doubt – but the general consensus in the tavern is still that the club will not be landing United talisman Rooney.
