The Daily Mail has punters moving from the pool table and over to the bar here in the Football Transfer Tavern.
This is because they claim Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has one of the best young defenders in the world in his sights.
The Blues manager was the one who gave Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane his initial chance at the club and even dropped first team regular Pepe to do so. Before his injury, the French defender did not disappoint.
Varane is clearly one of the best defenders around for his age level, but has fallen down the pecking order at Real Madrid – leaving Mourinho to swoop in.
The Blues manager claimed: “I think he is the best young central defender in the world. Already I think he’s the best.
“A young player must be somebody who plays in the World Cup for the first time.
‘These are players like Hazard, Neymar and Rafa Varane. Maybe I forget some others.”
We know exactly what Mourinho is like and are fully aware that this is him buttering the player up. Despite landing Saint-Etienne’s Kurt Zouma in January, landing another young defender and one who is as young and good as Varane would not go amiss.
Will the Blues make a move for Varane in the summer or will Kurt Zouma’s arrival be enough? Let us know your thoughts below.
