Jose Mourinho could well have handed Juan Mata a lifeline to stay at Stamford Bridge if The Guardian is to be believed.
The Blues’ manager has been under constant pressure to play the Chelsea number ten who is a firm favourite with not only the media but also the Stamford Bridge faithful.
Now it seems that despite the Special One claiming that the ‘door will be open’ for Mata to leave the Blues, Mourinho actually wants him to stay after all.
The Special One claimed: “Many times it hurts me, not just with him, with decisions I have to make. But I think to do my job in the best way … thinking the team more important than any player.
“When I have to make a decision I always try to be a cold one, icy, analyse the situation and try to make the best decision for the team … putting the person secondary.
“But yes, it hurts me. He’s a good kid, he works hard, not an easy situation for him not to be playing every time. He started nine matches in the Premier League, had lots of minutes on the pitch. I love it if he does well. That’s what I want.”
After the furious reaction fr0m Mata after his substitution at Southampton on New Year’s Day, it hardly comes as a shock that Mourinho has been forced to address the situation with the player.
