Chelsea came close to landing Italian international

pirloChelsea fans are looking rather wistful here in the Football Transfer Tavern as Metro claim they came close to signing an all-time great.

Under Carlo Ancelotti, the Blues were chasing Andrea Pirlo, and nearly landed the Italian star.

In his recent autobiography, the midfield legend talks about how he came close to wearing the Blue of Chelsea due to his relationship with Carlo Ancelotti, but was stopped by AC Milan president Silvio Berlusconi.

He claimed: “It was August 2009 and I’d reached agreement with Chelsea, the club where Ancelotti had just come in as manager.

“Carlo Ancelotti was my motivation for agreeing to head to London. But, in the meantime, Berlusconi had pulled out a second piece of paper.”

He further explained that the AC Milan supremo convinced him to stay at the club, only to then go and sell him to Serie A rivals Juventus!

The 34-year-old carried on by letting us know what Berlusconi said to him.

“Listen, Andrea, you just can’t do this. You’re the symbol of Milan, a standard bearer for this team, and we’ve already sold Kaka.

“You can’t jump ship as well. It’d be a terrible blow, to our image as much as anything. We can’t have everyone leaving.”

Of course the rest was history, and Chelsea did not land the player but went on to win another league title under manager Carlo Ancelotti.

Chelsea fans. Just think of Pirlo and Lampard working in tandem in the Blues midfield for second. What a double act that would have been. Let us know your thoughts below.
