Chelsea can’t afford to make this £100m mistake in the summer – here’s why

Some of the fans in the Transfer Tavern want Chelsea to sign Romelu Lukaku this summer, but our landlord isn’t so sure…

The Belgian has been in fine form lately, picking up a whopping 25 goals in the Premier League over the course of the 2016/17 season. If Chelsea are looking for a goalscorer, they would struggle to do better than him – in theory. But there are a number of variables for Conte to consider.

First and foremost, you have to consider Chelsea’s current situation. Reports have suggested that Diego Costa is closing in on a new contract at Stamford Bridge, making you question why the Blues even need Lukaku. Under Conte, Chelsea only ever use one striker, and so it seems unlikely that the duo would be able to play together. Two world class strikers would not be happy to fight it out for a starting role each week, and so that will undoubtedly cause tension. Not to mention, Costa’s form has been stellar in recent years too, and so Lukaku would hardly be an upgrade.

What’s more, you also have to note that signing Lukaku would be a real risk. The Belgian has never done it at the highest level, and when he was at Chelsea last time round he struggled to impress. Of course, he has grown and matured since then, but Chelsea are one step beyond Everton, and so the pressure that could come with his move could make him struggle.

The Times are reporting that a fee of around £100 million could be demanded by Everton. For Chelsea, that would represent a sizeable invest that not only will not guarantee results but it is also one that seems unnecessary if Costa stays.
