Chelsea fans in the Football Transfer Tavern know that Blues captain John Terry won’t be around forever and as the Daily Star reveals, Jose Mourinho is targeting Barcelona’s Gerard Pique as Terry’s ideal replacement.
It is likely that the Blues will soon be searching for a long-term replacement to step into the shoes of their 33-year-old defender.
And the London club will hope to ward off interest from Manchester United with a £24 million bid for the Spanish international in January.
Although despite both Premier League heavyweights being eager to tie him up, the 27-year-old has already dismissed a move to Old Trafford and insists he is happy at the Camp Nou despite a drop in form.
But Mourinho will also be keen to bring him in to add some much-needed competition for places, with there not being many other options beyond his first-choice central defensive pairing of Gary Cahill and John Terry.
Whilst on the other hand, Louis van Gaal was hoping to bolster the Red Devils’ back line by bringing the Spaniard back to Old Trafford after his spell at the club between 2004 and 2008.
But despite both managers’ desire to bring Pique back to England, the Barcelona star’s comments suggested he isn’t so forthcoming.
He said: “I left a lot of friends there (Manchester) and was really happy there, even if I didn’t play as much as I wanted to.
“But I’ve always said I want to retire here and, if possible, stay here all my career.
“At this moment I’m not thinking about leaving, and I’m really happy if it’s true that United want me… but I want to stay.
“I’m a Barcelona fan, I have been since I was a kid, and I want to stay.”
