Chelsea & City Told Offers Less Than €40M ‘Impossible To Consider’

Won't get a look in

Luis Filipe Vieira, President of Portuguese Liga team S.L. Benfica, has sent out the most resounding message of his club’s ambitions to date, by slapping a €40m (£32.9m) price tag on 23 year old Brazilian defender David Luiz. Earlier, Vieira stated:

“We would only begin talks over an offer of about €40million. It would be impossible to consider any offer less than that because it would be bad business for us. I want David Luiz to stay at the club for this season.”

Last week, it was reported that big spending Manchester City were the front runners for Luiz’ signature, and although they could easily afford it, the question is whether Luiz is good enough to handle life at the top, and more importantly would he get a game?

At Manchester City, the defence has improved steadily with Kolo Toure and Vincent Kompany taking care of business at the back, and (with goalkeeper Joe Hart’s help) just about managed to keep out Tottenham on Saturday.

Although Luiz won the Portuguese League Footballer of the Year award for 2010, it is difficult to imagine the young defender with such decorations at Eastlands, as questions would undoubtedly be asked if Toure or Kompany were to be dropped for some of the more vital games.

Even Luiz’ ability to play at left back would not help him get a consistent starting place in the City lineup, since Wayne Bridge and new signing Aleksandar Kolarov already provide the width City will need against teams such as Blackburn and Bolton, whom they may rightly or wrongly see as “banana skins” on their attempted path to the league title.

The same applies to the Chelsea backline, with Ashley Cole seemingly running riot as much on the pitch as off it. John Terry and Alex are both still under the age of thirty and continue to produce the goods with consistency in every Premier League campaign, even if West Bromwich Albion weren’t the most testing of ways to start the season.

In conclusion, Luiz is better off staying right where he is unless Benfica are (hard as it is to imagine) desperate for money. Sensible comments below please…..
