Here in the Football Transfer Tavern, Manchester United fans are shocked at the claim from Metro as the publication notes that Chelsea are ready to up their offer for Wayne Rooney.
It was only this week that we had heard the possibility that Rooney could well decide to stay at Old Trafford, especially given the stance taken by Manchester United over selling him to a Premier League rival and also his reluctance to move abroad.
Now it seems that a way out could well be offered for the player as Chelsea are believed to be willing to increase their initial bid to a massive £40 million.
David Moyes is still keen on keeping the forward yet is fully aware that £40 million for a player who is getting close to 30 and wants out of the club is not a bad deal by any stretch of the imagination.
Add to this the other forwards at his disposal and the manager is confident he could cope without Rooney who has also been linked with a move to Arsenal this summer.
Jose Mourinho meanwhile has seen Romelu Lukaku do exceptionally well in the pre-season tours of both Asia and America and has also spoken out about the need to get Fernando Torres back to what he once was – and of course Jose thinks he is the man to do it.
All of this had fans in the tavern thinking that a move for Rooney was increasingly unlikely but as we all know, in football anything can happen and this latest curve-ball suggests that Chelsea are not done with the England international just quite yet.
Will Chelsea submit a bid of £40 million for Rooney? Should Manchester United accept this fee for the wantaway player? Let us know your thoughts below.
