The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are very confused by some of the names they have been linked with in the January transfer window. It is clear that Antonio Conte wants a new striker this January as he looks to offload Michy Batshuayi and bring in someone new to compete with Alvaro Morata up front. Indeed, it looks like they are after a target man.
West Ham forward Andy Carroll was a major target for Chelsea before he suffered a serious ankle injury recently. And since finding out that Carroll is no longer available, Conte seems to have turned his attention to Stoke City giant Peter Crouch.
Rather than targeting Carroll or Crouch, Chelsea should press ahead with their other target this month. Roma striker Edin Dzeko would be perfect for Conte’s team and reports suggest he could soon be on his way to Stamford Bridge.
Dzeko is scoring goals for fun in Italy at the moment. The 31-year-old has nine goals in 18 league starts this season for the Serie A side and has a further three goals in the Champions League. Furthermore, he is the ideal candidate for the vacant striker role at Chelsea because he has experience of playing Premier League football before.
Dzeko was a success at Manchester City and still has plenty left in the tank. On top of that, he is a tall striker who can hold the ball up, which fits Conte’s idea of the type of striker he wants to add to his squad.
With Alvaro Morata out of form at the moment, Dzeko could even start for Chelsea which would undoubtedly send a message to Morata, telling him to swiftly return to form by working harder in training.
