Chelsea could be handed promising boost in potential summer managerial search – report

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are concerned about the long-term future of Antonio Conte. The Italian still has just shy of 18 months on his contract at Stamford Bridge, but speculation has been rising about his future since his decision to sign a new contract without an extension on its length last year.

Chelsea’s mixed form this season, too, has had an impact – with the manager not having the similar seismic effect that he had at Stamford Bridge last season.

It wouldn’t be a surprise, then, to see him depart at the end of the campaign. Indeed, the Evening Standard have reported recently that its a realistic proposition. For Chelsea, preparing for that potential end makes sense, and it appears as though they could have a decent chance of landing one potential manager.

According to the Telegraph, who have listed a number of potential Conte replacements, there is one man that could be receptive to a Chelsea approach – Luis Enrique. The publication reports that a summer approach for his services may be ‘well received’, perhaps suggesting that he may well be open to a switch.

Enrique’s last management spell was, of course, at Barcelona – where he led the Spanish side to a period of significant success.

Significantly, the Telegraph notes that Enrique would be unlikely to accept a deal mid-season, but that would work for Chelsea just fine. It wouldn’t make sense to move Conte on now, and any eventual departure would likely be on mutual terms at the end of the season – barring a disaster for the Blues in the second-half of the season.

A move for Enrique, then, would make sense – and it appears as though there is at least a chance of the Spaniard being up for it.

Landlord’s Verdict

A move for Enrique would be met with uncertainty amongst Chelsea fans, but his track record has proven that he’s good enough to step up to the occasion.

That being said, Chelsea won’t want to lose Conte – as the impact that he has had in England has been seismic.

It doesn’t hurt to make enquiries for a succession plan – though.
