There’s a consistent conveyer belt of talent at Chelsea that has kept the club in a state of progression under Roman Abramovic. The Blues are always on the look-out for the next big thing, with top young talents regularly brought to Stamford Bridge with a view to seeing first-team football.
This, unfortunately, though, comes at a cost. It means that many of the players that are already at the club are forgotten about. Unless someone is able to come in and immediately make an impact, they run the risk of losing their prominence within the squad.
That certainly happened in the case of Marco van Ginkel. Signed from Vitesse, he looked like a bright talent and the initial signs were good. However, an injury put a halt to his first season in England – and he’s never been able to recover.
He’s since spent most of his time away from Chelsea on loan, suffering numerous injury problems along the way.
Now, though, according to the Evening Standard, Chelsea could be ready to give him a chance. He’s apparently been included in the Blues’ squad for the rest of their Europa League campaign, with the club said to be willing to give him a chance to resurrect his career.
He’s currently out injured, but should return within the next couple of months, the Evening Standard also notes.
It’s hard to see van Ginkel being given a regular role in the Chelsea team – even in Europe – but his inclusion does, if nothing else, highlight that Chelsea haven’t forgotten about him. If they had no plans to feature him at all, they simply wouldn’t have added his name – but that’s not the case.
A strong, mobile and technically gifted midfield, he’s certainly got the raw talent to play within Maurizio Sarri’s midfield.
Significantly, Chelsea aren’t blessed with midfield depth following the sale of Cesc Fabregas, and so there’s at least a chance that an extra body could be needed, especially given how many games are on the horizon for the Blues.
He looked like a good player after he was signed in 2013, before injuries hampered his development, and if his form for PSV last season is anything to go by, he’s still got a lot of quality to show off.
The Dutchman only has a few months to prove his worth, but maybe this is a sign that Maurizio Sarri is willing to take a look at him.
