For the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern, signing a new midfielder is an absolute priority this summer…
With a distinct lack of depth in the middle-of-the-park, Chelsea are undoubtedly going to have to recruit before the end of the summer, and according to Corriere Dello Sport, Antonio Conte may have found his man.
Corriere Dello Sport notes that Conte has personally asked for information regarding the availability of Renato Sanches – with the Italian clearly a fan of the midfielder. Significantly, he is said to be available on a loan basis, and whilst AC Milan are also vying for his signature, Chelsea could hold an advantage as they are noted to be happy to take him on for the year that Bayern are hoping for.
Sanches moved to Bayern last summer after impressing at Euro 2016. Despite being a teenager, he had proven his worth as one of Europe’s best midfielders, hence why he was able to earn a move to Bayern.
However, since that point, he has struggled for game time, and given that his development is at such a crucial time, it appears as though Bayern are keen to give him minutes elsewhere.
Whilst loan deals at the highest level are rare, this is a move that could work out very well for Chelsea. Their lack of depth means that whilst Sanches may not be a starter, he will undoubtedly get regular game time, whilst he would also be featuring at the highest level.
A loan move will offer little risk for the Blues, and it would mean that Conte can re-assess his options next summer with a scope to building out his midfield for the long-haul.
Despite his limited game time over the last year or so, he is still a top player – with a fantastic eye for a pass in the ilk of Cesc Fabregas and a running style that often means he cannot be stopped.
