The Chelsea fans in the Football Transfer Tavern aren’t sure about this one…
Without doubt, the most overarching theme from Chelsea’s summer transfer window was Antonio Conte’s pursuit of a defensive rebuild.
Throughout the summer, the Blues were linked with a host of world-renowned central defenders, as Conte looked to sure up Chelsea’s faltering defensive line.
Now, it would appear that the Italian is still not content, despite the captures of both David Luiz and Marcos Alonso at the end of the window – and he could launch yet another huge move in January.
According to the Sun, Chelsea could go in for AC Milan defender Alessio Romagnoli in January – after reconsidering their hesitancy to spend the £49m demanded by the Italian giants.
They add that the uncertainty surrounding the trio of Cahill, Terry and Luiz may force Conte’s hand – and that the Blues are seriously considering the option.
This one has received mixed reviews in the Football Transfer Tavern, purely because it is a huge sum of money to spend on a relatively unproven player.
Romagnoli has impressed this season, but Serie A is a very different beast to the Premier League.
Our landlord has expressed similar concerns, and noted in particular that another big money defensive signing could shut the door on a Chelsea return for talented starlet Andreas Christensen.
The Blues have been linked with a host of targets in recent months, and very few have come to fruition – but given that Chelsea’s interest in Romagnoli simply will not go away – this one could have some legs.
