David Luiz has admitted that it is great to have Frank Lampard back at Chelsea and has admitted the new manager is already leading the team in the same way as he was during his playing days.
Speaking to Goal about his former team-mate’s return to Stamford Bridge, the Brazil international stated that it would be easier to understand what the manager wanted from his group of players moving forward.
“He’s leading the team like he did as a player but just in a different way now,” he said. “He cannot run anymore or score goals for us but he’s still a leader so it will be easy to understand him. It’s great to have him back and not just him but all his staff as well because they have known this club for a long time, they love this club and they were waiting for this opportunity.”
Lampard will have his work cut out for him at Chelsea this season; however, the chance to manage his former club may not have presented itself at a more opportune time.
With a current transfer ban in place, expectations might be a little more relaxed than if he had the opportunity to recruit new players, although there will still be a certain goal and target in mind when it comes down to where the Blues want to be at the end of the campaign. However, he has insisted that the standards and expectations will remain as high as possible (club’s official website).
Indeed, the fact that Luiz already believes Lampard is leading the team in the same efforts as he did as a player can only bode well for the future of the club. The ex-midfielder helped Chelsea win 13 different honours during his playing days, including three Premier League titles and their only Champions League trophy (Transfermarkt).
The 41-year-old will know what it means to be at Stamford Bridge and will look for nothing less than what he provided the west London outfit with during his 13-year tenure in the middle of the pitch. His uncle and former manager, Harry Redknapp, once described Lampard as a man with the same dedication to his game as Tiger Woods back in 2009 (Telegraph).
Thus, that could make it a lot easier for the players to understand what Lampard demands from them as well, as he has prior knowledge of the league and what it takes to win it – a trait that Maurizio Sarri did not have in his own locker (Transfermarkt).
Luiz’s comments must be rather encouraging for Chelsea fans to hear as it sounds as though Lampard has not changed since his departure and is already showing signs that he has what it takes to turn the club back into the team they once were.
He is not the only player to have recently admitted that the former Blue is the right man for the job either, with Olivier Giroud also backing up the defender’s claim (BBC).
Obviously, it is very early into the former Derby County manager’s career in the dugout, but if he has the backing of the players who will be doing the work for him on the pitch and a potentially relaxed environment from those above him, then he might just have all the tools to further solidify himself as a Chelsea legend.
