The Spanish media have come up with the rumour of the day; according to reports published by Cadena Ser, Branislav Ivanovic is on the brink of sealing a move to Sevilla.
And what’s more, this is not simply the Spanish outfit making an audacious bid doomed to failure: Chelsea have apparently offered Ivanovic to them; an approach out of the blue, as it were.
Well, Sevilla would be delighted to have a player of Ivanovic’s status at the club; they currently sit 10th in La Liga, with a goal-difference of -5, so would certainly welcome a top defender. However, given Chelsea’s recent injury problems at the back, the last thing they need at the moment is to lose another defender. Carlo Ancelotti will either be furious or baffled by this rumour… or perhaps both.
There probably isn’t too much cause for concern, though: Ivanovic has played more games for Chelsea than any other defender this season, and barring as-yet unheard-of problems behind the scenes, there is no reason why he should want to leave, nor why the Premiership champions should want to sell.
Not to mention the fact that, at £15m, Ivanovic is far beyond Sevilla’s financial capabilities.
So don’t panic yet, Chelsea fans: either they know something we don’t or, more likely, there’s an idealistic Sevilla fan working for Cadena Ser Sports.
