The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are beginning to come to the realisation that John Terry is likely to leave the club at the end of the season…
With his contract set to expire at the end of the current campaign, and a mixture of form and injury issues cementing his place on the sidelines – the time is certainly approaching for the English veteran to hang up his Chelsea boots.
For the Blues in the Tavern, when the day does come it will undoubtedly be a sad one – but it certainly makes sense in the grand scheme of things.
However, as soon as thought has passed from the seemingly impending departure of John Terry – attention will likely turn to who the Blues can sign to replace him. The real question, though, is not who they can sign, but rather – who they can promote. What’s more, simply put – the real answer to that question is Andreas Christensen.
The Danish defender has been on fire whilst on loan with Borussia Monchengladbach over the last 18 months, and with his tenure at the German side set to come to a close at the end of the current campaign – the time has come to bring him home.
Like Terry, he is a ball playing defender. He is comfortable with both feet, able to play a pass and make a tackle, but unlike Terry – he is also mobile and pacey at the back. In many ways, he is the complete defender.
A loan made sense at the time, given his lack of experience, but whilst he has been gone he has played in Europe and in Germany – and he has improved dramatically in that time.
Sure, Chelsea could go out and spend £40 or £50 million on a recognised, renowned central defender – but what would be the point? Christensen is ready, and it is time to make use of the Chelsea academy.
