The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping that their side will be able to bring in a few new faces in January. Antonio Conte is, quite clearly, desperate to improve his team – particularly after the debacle surrounding their side’s lack of activity over the summer – and so a few moves this month are essential.
Ross Barkley has already come through the door, and according to the Mirror, another player is attracting the interest of the Blues. Chelsea are apparently rivalling Man Utd and Man City for the signing of Roma midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini – who has a surprisingly low buy-out clause of just £21 million.
Undoubtedly, if the Blues were able to land him for that price, it would be considered a bargain in the modern market. With transfer fees inflating and records being broken seemingly every window, the price would be nothing short of a steal for a player that has emerged as one of Europe’s best young midfielders.
Despite being just 21-years-old, he’s already an Italy international, and he’s also been a regular for Roma in Serie A this season.
A move would no doubt go down well with Antonio Conte, with the Italian manager likely to be very familiar with his compatriot. A central midfielder by trade, he’d offer Conte some much-needed depth in midfield, whilst also serving as a long-term replacement for a player like Cesc Fabregas – who is already 30-years-old.
Given the interest in Pellegrini, a move won’t be easy for Chelsea. What’s more, as the Mirror report, Roma will want to hold on to their star midfielder, and so a new deal could well be in the offing in the near future.
That being said, it’s certainly worth Chelsea remaining in the hunt for him, and if it becomes clear that he isn’t going to sign a new deal, then a move makes a lot of sense – particularly at such a cheap price.
