Chelsea fans in the Football Transfer Tavern have met the news as reported by Metro with general agreement after the publication claimed the Blues are ready to enter the race to land Greece international and Manchester City transfer target Kyriakos Papadopoulos.
The tall, steely Schalke defender has been impressing onlookers in the Bundesliga and is rated at around £15 million by the Veltins Arena-based side.
Chelsea have already been looking to the German top flight to lure away talent for next season and the Stamford Bridge club are still looking at finalising a deal for Bayer Leverkusen’s Andre Schurrle.
The Blues have been used to rotating the squad in recent weeks with a battle for a top four place in the Premier League and a race to win the Europa League meaning interim boss Rafael Benitez has had to call on numerous players who have had to switch positions – notably David Luiz who has flourished in the midfield role of late.
Twenty-one-year-old Papadopoulos is also in the Luiz mode – in terms of his versatility and he is capable in central defence, in full back or in the defensive midfield position.
Manchester City and Atletico Madrid are expected to up their efforts to sign him in the summer so Chelsea will face something of a battle to land him and potentially place him at the heart of a Jose Mourinho summer rebuild job.
