For the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern, a defensive rejig is near the top of their wishlist this summer…
John Terry is set to leave this summer, whilst the likes of Gary Cahill and David Luiz are both unlikely to remain a key part of Conte’s plans long-term given their age. Meanwhile, extra depth on the left-hand and right-hand side of the Chelsea defence is necessary, with Victor Moses and Marcos Alonso the only real options in the role at present.
Clearly, then, some big changes are needed at the back this summer – and according to the Evening Standard, they could well be coming. As per the Evening Standard, Chelsea are keen to sign one of Leonardo Bonucci or Virgil van Dijk this summer, whilst Andreas Christensen is also expected to return from a two-year loan spell. Elsewhere, Kurt Zouma could be made available for loan, with the Frenchman still recovering from a knee injury sustained last year.
It is strange to consider the defensive changes needed at Stamford Bridge this summer, especially when you consider that it was arguably the most impressive part of the Chelsea first team last season, but such is life at the pinnacle of the English football pyramid. Chelsea cannot afford to rest upon their laurels, particularly when sides around them are improving.
Kurt Zouma’s potential short-term departure is a topic of particular interest in the pub, with many supporters intrigued to see where he may go. Before his injury, he was a regular at Stamford Bridge, and so our landlord is expecting him to go to a top European side.
