The Chelsea fans in the Football Transfer Tavern aren’t sure about this one…
Chelsea’s pursuit of defensive depth has been long discussed in the Football Transfer Tavern, with the Blues in attendance fearful that the trio of John Terry, Gary Cahill and Branislav Ivanovic could be set to see their Chelsea careers to come to a premature end.
The Chelsea defence, in general, has been out of sorts so far this season, so Antonio Conte will no doubt be looking to improve it going forward – and it would appear that he is beginning that process as early as this weekend.
According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea are set to send scouts to watch Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson this weekend, with Boro taking on Arsenal in what is sure to be a difficult game for the young defender.
They add that Gibson is a primary target as Chelsea look to rebuild their defence.
Whilst he does not carry the high profile of a player like Leonardo Bonucci, Gibson is a young defender that could serve Chelsea defensive needs long-term. His lower profile could also mean he would carry a lower transfer fee – meaning that Chelsea would have a greater chance of getting him on board.
A few of the Chelsea fans by the bar are not happy with this one, though, as they had their heart set on a big-money January signing. Leonardo Bonucci, anyone?
Our landlord thinks a Gibson makes a lot of sense.
