Chelsea eye up Real left back as Cole replacement

After a depressing defeat in the final of the Club World Cup to Corinthians, Chelsea fans are on a bit of downer in the Football Transfer Tavern but news is emerging that the Blues are readying a move for Real Madrid’s Fabio Coentrao.

The Daily Star reports that the £12 million valued defender is being lined up to replace Ashley Cole at the club after he fell out of favour with Jose Mourinho at the Bernabeu and a summer switch may suit both parties.

He only moved to Real from Benfica in a £20m deal in the summer of 2011 and is he under contract until 2017, however it appears that the La Liga champions are ready to offload the left back as they look for funds to help finance summer transfers.

The article quotes an unknown club source who said: “If an interesting offer comes in, we will consider it.”

Ryan Bertrand was believed to be ready to step into Cole’s shoes when he is expected to depart at the end of the season but the club are having second thoughts on whether he is good enough to be the first choice left back at the club.
