Chelsea face competition from CL side as race for 25-year-old defender heats up

For the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern, the arrival of defensive reinforcements in January are absolutely essential…

Chelsea have been fantastic defensively this season, and after a slow start – they have become simply unstoppable in recent weeks.

A big part of that is Chelsea’s resolute defending, with the back 3 consisting of Cahill, Azpilicueta and Luiz simply ticking all of the boxes for Conte.

Something that is perhaps less reliable, however, is Chelsea’s wing back situation. Victor Moses has come in and done well, but it remains to be seen how well that will pan out – and Marcos Alonso looked out-of-his-depth against Man City last weekend.

Alonso is, perhaps, the most worrying of the duo – with Moses looking great at present – and so it would not come as a surprise to learn that Chelsea are targeting depth in that position.

Perhaps more frustrating, though, is that the Blues may struggle to get a deal done. Calcio Mercato are reporting that Chelsea have got their sights set on a deal for Napoli left-back Faouzi Ghoulam – but face pretty strong competition from Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.

What’s more, Calcio Mercato are also reporting that Chelsea are also facing a fight with current side Napoli – who are looking to tie the left-back down to a new deal.

Ghoulam has proven to be a pretty essential part of Napoli’s efforts in Serie A this season, with the 25-year-old making 12 starts so far this campaign. He has also been a constant in their Champions League efforts, with Napoli recently progressing into the last 16 of that competition.

Our landlord thinks that whilst Ghoulam would be a good signing, Chelsea seemingly have a number of hurdles to stumble across – and any deal surely looks like a complicated one.
