The Chelsea fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are not sure that he’s worth that much…
Chelsea have impressed so far this season, but the Blues in the Transfer Tavern have had one overarching fear surrounding Antonio Conte’s management style.
The Italian has got his side playing well – but his problem lies in the fact that he has largely relied on a set of 11 players. These players have started every game for the best part of 2 months – and that has made it clear just how little squad depth Conte has available to him.
It would make sense, then, that Chelsea have been touted with defensive reinforcements in January – with Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson reportedly on the list.
However, it would appear that any deal to land the defender will be no easy feat, with the Mirror reporting that the Boro have slapped a huge £35m price tag on the centre-half.
What’s more, the Mirror are also reporting that the Premier League side are unwilling to let Gibson go without a fight – which would suggest that any deal will prove difficult to come by for the Blues.
This has come as a blow to the Chelsea fans in the Tavern, many of whom were suggesting that Gibson would be a good value option for Conte. They do, however, believe that £35m is far too much for the young Englishman – and they think that Conte should look elsewhere for a better value option.
Nonetheless, with defensive reinforcements clearly essential for Conte – our landlord thinks that he could look towards the Blues’ youth system in search of answers – with players like Clarke-Salter and Christensen offering good value options.
