The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are desperate for their side to land a few more players…
The Blues really struggled to put their mark on the game against Arsenal in the Community Shield, and whilst the Gunners brought on players like Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott to name a few – Chelsea had to count on a bench made up of mostly debutants.
Clearly, then, ahead of the new season, a few new signings are required. Conte is working to that end, but it doesn’t appear as though the quest will be easy, at least it won’t be for one versatile target.
According to Don Balon, Chelsea are keen on Barcelona ace Sergi Roberto, who has a release clause of €40 million (£36.1 million). However, a deal will be tough to secure, as it is said that Monaco and Man Utd are also keen on the player, meaning that he will likely have a pick of clubs to choose from if he decides to leave.
This puts Chelsea in a more difficult situation as both Monaco and Man Utd are offering very different projects to the Blues, but both certainly offer a degree of attraction.
The release clause stipulation also means that Chelsea can’t simply outbid their rivals either. If each side pays the required amount, it will be down to Roberto to decide.
Whilst there is no suggestion that Roberto would prefer a move to Manchester or to Monaco, the situation makes it far harder for Chelsea to get their man.
For his part, Roberto would certainly fit in well at Stamford Bridge, with his ability to play in a variety of positions likely attracting Antonio Conte.
With just a week to go until the start of the season, Conte must move quickly, and rival competition is only going to slow him down.
