The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern were all talking about Belgian midfielder Radja Nainggolan earlier this week after reports from Transfer Market Web suggested that the Blues were scouting him against Barcelona on Wednesday night. He didn’t end up playing, having suffered an injury, but the prospect of a move is still worthy of consideration for Chelsea.
Nainggolan is, of course, a powerful midfielder that has been controlling the middle of the park for Roma in Italy for a number of years. The prospect of him moving to Stamford Bridge is certainly an interesting one, particularly given the struggles of both Cesc Fabregas and Tiemoue Bakayoko.
However, it doesn’t appear as though Chelsea fans are convinced by him.
We recently polled fans on the topic by asking them whether the Blues should sign him, and the results were simply too close to call. In the end, an even split of 50% for and 50% against was the final result – highlighting just how divisive the midfielder is amongst Chelsea fans.
Of course, on the surface, a deal would make sense. He offers incredible energy, passing, technique and aggression, and Chelsea have lacked every one of those traits this term.
However, at 29-years-old, he’s clearly not a long-term solution for the Blues. Not to mention, given that he’s rated at £40.5 million by Transfer Markt, he wouldn’t be a cheap signing either.
For the Blues, then, there are pros and cons to this deal – and it will be up to management to decide if it makes sense. The Chelsea fans, though, haven’t been able to come to a definitive conclusion.
