Chelsea’s one hundred percent start to the season came to an end after they drew 0-0 with West Ham at the London Stadium last Sunday in a game that displayed why the Blues will probably fall short in the title race.
With Alvaro Morata struggling for form and confidence, Maurizio Sarri opted to remain with Olivier Giroud up front following his impressive display against Cardiff City the previous weekend where he assisted Chelsea’s first two goals.
This time round, however, the Frenchman had little impact in the game before being replaced by Morata in the second half who, despite putting in a much better performance than some of his recent ones, was also unable to influence the match.
Ultimately, neither Giroud or Morata are prolific enough to help Chelsea mount a real title challenge, a thought that is echoed by Blues supporters who are desperate to see the club bring in a new No.9.
£58.5m-rated (via Transfermarkt) Morata has been a disaster since arriving from Real Madrid last summer, while Giroud was brought in as a Plan B. Going forward, Chelsea need to sign another centre-forward or risk being condemned to finishes outside the top four.
Looking at the starting XIs of Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea, there is not too much of a difference in quality, with the latter falling short compared to the other two because of their striker conundrum.
If Sarri had a Sergio Aguero-esque striker leading the Chelsea line, one could only imagine what the Italian could accomplish from the Stamford Bridge dugout.
The ideal signing for the Blues would be Aguero’s compatriot, Mauro Icardi, but the Inter Milan captain will most certainly command a fee that owner Roman Abramovich would be unwilling to pay.
Nevertheless, Chelsea need to bring in a new No.9 as soon as possible, and supporters are right to not be content with what Giroud and Morata are currently offering.
