New Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is said to be an admirer of Christian Pulisic, seeing him as a player who possesses a lot of potential.
Pulisic, who joined the Blues from Borussia Dortmund in January in a £58m deal before returning to the German club on loan, is set to be a part of Lampard’s squad for the new season.
And according to football consultant Ian McGarry, the 41-year-old is expecting big things from his American attacking midfielder.
“As far as I’m told and speaking to people at Chelsea, people close to Frank Lampard, he sees a lot of potential in Pulisic,” McGarry said on The Transfer Window podcast (via Daily Star. “Pulisic will probably alternate with Mason Mount in the number 10 position,” he later added.
Deploying a No.10 like what McGarry has suggested indicates the possible use of a 4-2-3-1 formation under Lampard. Wherever Pulisic plays, though, he has the ability to make an impact both now and in the future.
For example, when it comes to creating chances, the 20-year-old should be able to help Chelsea out there. In the Bundesliga last season, he made 1 key pass per game. Out of the Blues’ current crop of attackers, only Willian averaged more in the Premier League at 2.5 (as per WhoScored).
Pulisic’s introduction to the first team should also give Chelsea a boost on the flank. Following Eden Hazard’s departure to Real Madrid, they have lost a player who could leave full-backs for dead to carry the team’s attack.
Averaging 2.1 dribbles per game, Pulisic is not quite on Hazard’s level yet, with the Belgium captain managing 3.7 in comparison.
However, the USA international’s 2.1 dribbles were still more than what any other current Chelsea player averaged in the league last season and are looking increasingly handy now that Hazard is gone.
Based on those two areas alone, it is easy to understand why any coach would believe Pulisic is a player with huge potential.
