Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has confirmed that he sees a big future ahead for teenage defender Ethan Ampadu.
Speaking to the press during the club’s pre-season tour via the Express, the former Blues midfielder made it clear that the 18-year-old Wales international has only gone out on loan to receive regular first-team minutes at RB Leipzig.
Goal have also confirmed that there is no option-to-buy clause in Ampadu’s deal to the Bundesliga side as the teenager becomes the second Chelsea defender to leave on loan, with Jake Clarke-Salter heading to Birmingham City for the season (per Chelsea’s official website).
One reason why Lampard decided to loan out Ampadu for the year as stated in his press conference was due to the lack of playing time the versatile youngster had last season.
Lampard said to the press: “I’m a big fan (of Ampadu). But with the minutes he played last year, in the interest of Ethan and of Chelsea, the idea he can play a lot of games somewhere could be good for him.”
Looking at Ampadu’s numbers from last season, Lampard’s words do hold some truth to them.
The teenager only managed five first-team appearances for the Blues, with only three of those being starts (per Transfermarkt), and when you consider Chelsea made it all the way to the Europa League final and played a total of 63 competitive games last season (per Transfermarkt), Ampadu was hardly given a chance to shine for the senior squad.
With Ampadu already a full international with Wales, loaning him out for the year to gain a taste of first-team football appears to make sense, and heading to a club like Leipzig that has seen the likes of Ademola Lookman thrive there as his numbers from Transfermarkt show, the teenager is heading into an environment that has seen British talent develop well.
Lampard has already said he is a big a fan of the defender per the aforementioned Express report, and a season at Leipzig will allow Ampadu to gain a full year of senior football at a club that has already proven to be a good spot for young players to develop at.
Chelsea fans, will Ampadu become a first-team player in the future? Let us know!
