The Daily Mirror have the best possible news for Chelsea fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern after the performance of David Luiz this weekend.
The error prone defender was once again responsible for conceding a goal against Cardiff City and still has not convinced manager Jose Mourinho he can be trusted.
Come January, Chelsea will be shopping around for another centre back and have been handed a huge boost with the news that Porto defender and long-term target Eliaquim Mangala has now hired Jorge Mendes as his agent.
The so called ‘super agent’ is close friends with Jose Mourinho, not to mention his long-term representative, and has been responsible for a number of transfers to clubs Mourinho has been at the helm of. So much so, that our landlord points out that Mourinho’s camp at Real Madrid was dubbed ‘team Mendes’ such was the role played by the agent.
Now it seems 22-year-old Mangala – who has been a target of both Chelsea and Manchester United – could well be set for a winter move to Stamford Bridge. Mourinho is desperate to bring in a young defender who he can put his faith in, and has identified the French international as the man he wants to work with.
One of our punters notes that Mangala will not be cheap, with a £40 million buy out clause in his contract, but Mourinho is only too aware that you cannot put a price on good defending – something both Gary Cahill and David Luiz are yet to master the concept of.
Will Chelsea add the highly rated Frenchman to their ranks in January? Let us know your thoughts below.
