The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are beginning to get nervous ahead of their side’s showdown with Barcelona next week. The Blues got lucky at Stamford Bridge, but with another 90 minutes – and potentially extra time on the horizon – it’s fair to say that confidence is not all that high.
Unfortunately, then, news of another injury blow for the Blues isn’t going to calm their nerves.
A combination of ankle and knee injuries are reportedly the cause of his issues, and not even a number of specialist visits have been able to make things better.
That could push his return date back to April, and given that Chelsea’s season will come to an end in mid-May, that won’t leave much time for the Brazilian to return to action this season.
Andreas Christensen has struggled over the last few weeks, and with a date with Lionel Messi on the horizon, the prospect of a return for Luiz may have been attractive to Antonio Conte. However, judging by this report, he’ll have to persist with the faltering Dane.
David Luiz wasn’t great before his injury, but there is no doubting his quality when he is at his best. Last season he was the star of the show in defence, let’s not forget, and at that point, his signing was lauded as a masterstroke.
Against Barcelona, in particular, Chelsea need experience – and Christensen simply doesn’t have that.
Nonetheless, the Dane is going to have to step up – with Luiz clearly not going to be available.
