The Blues are enduring a nightmare start to the season, picking up just eight points from their first eight games, and already look out of the title race. Manager Jose Mourinho has been under intense criticism but received a vote of confidence from the board last week.
Whilst that assured Mourinho of his short-term future, as long as results pick-up, Chelsea are beginning to make plans for the long-term; with reports indicating they have identified Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone as their ideal managerial replacement.
Simeone has excelled in Spain with Atletico, winning the 2013/14 La Liga title and breaking the dominance of Barcelona and Real Madrid in the process. He also led the club to the Champions League final in 2014, where the Argentine was unfortunate to see his side lose to Carlo Ancelotti’s Real.
Portuguese reports indicate Mourinho is aware of the plans to replace him and state the changes will come at a cost, as Simeone’s contract with Atletico demands a pay-out of £15m if he is to leave the Vicente Calderon.
Chelsea fans in the Tavern are weighing up whether such a move would be beneficial, due to the large figures involved, and we’ve called it as a 50/50 split here at the bar.
