Chelsea fans are in an excited mood in the Football Transfer Tavern this afternoon after it is revealed by The Evening Standard that Napoli have confirmed they have held today with Chelsea over a summer deal for striker Edinson Cavani.
New Blues manager Jose Mourinho has made bringing a powerful centre forward to the club one of his transfer priorities after arriving back at the club after seven years away and the 26-year-old is top of his wishlist.
Mourinho has already seen his top target Radamel Falcao move to French money bags outfit Monaco and he is desperate to ensure that the Uruguayan international forward ends up playing his football at Stamford Bridge next season.
Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis insists the Serie A club want to keep Cavani but he would have to sell if Chelsea pay the massive £53 million release clause.
“There is interest from Chelsea in Cavani,” said De Laurentiis this morning. “They will call me in the next few hours. I will be delighted if he stays but if he leaves then he will be adequately replaced.”
Manchester City’s incoming manager Manuel Pellegrini is also interested in a move for the 26-year-old and could be ready to challenge Chelsea for his signature.
