Chelsea ‘increasingly likely’ to land significant January deal as deadline day looms – report

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping that the January transfer window will end with a bang. The Blues have been pretty quiet so far this month, but there is a clear need for improvement.

Significantly, there is a decent chance of that happening, it seems. According to the Daily Mail, there is an ‘increasingly likely’ chance that Olivier Giroud will end up at Stamford Bridge this month.

The Blues are on the hunt for a target-man, and whilst a number of targets have been considered, it appears as though a move for the Arsenal attacker is the most likely option at this point.

Alvaro Morata and Michy Batshuayi have scored a total of 22 goals together this season, with the majority of the former’s coming towards the beginning of the campaign. As the season has continued, Morata has found it increasingly difficult to find the net, whilst Michy Batshuayi’s general form has been mixed at best.

So, it’s clear that Chelsea need a new forward, and Giroud would certainly fit the bill. He’s far more physical than Chelsea’s current crop of attackers, giving Conte more of a direct route to goal if that is what he’s looking for. He’s picked up 7 goals this season, which is significant given his lack of game time – particularly in contrast to Alvaro Morata.

As a proven Premier League goalscorer, his signing would represent little risk in that regard, too, and so a move makes sense for the Blues. Chelsea’s interest has been documented in recent days, notably by the Daily Mail, but as this latest report notes, it now seems ‘increasingly likely’ that Chelsea will get their man.

Landlord’s Verdict

Arsenal may want to move Giroud on, given his lack of game time and the fact that he is 31-years-old.

For Chelsea, he’s certainly above the age-range that they typically look to move for, but they’ve left it too late to have much say on the matter.

A move for Giroud, in the context of the season, makes sense – though a deal is clearly far away from being done.
