It has been a slow few weeks for the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern, but it looks like business is about to pick up…
With just a few days to go until the start of the Premier League season, and on the back of a disappointing defeat to Arsenal in the Community Shield, it appears as though the Chelsea brass is beginning to address the various needs within the Chelsea squad.
Fortunately, whilst the start of the season is close, there are still a few weeks for the Blues to go about their business, but according to the Daily Mail, they don’t want to wait that long – and they are said to have already launched a move for one target.
Sami Mokbel of the Daily Mail writes that Chelsea have made a £25 million swoop for Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, with the Englishman’s current contract set to expire at the end of the season.
Arsenal, it is said, are keen to hang on to him, but his contractual situation could affect their stance, whilst the prospect of more regular game time at Stamford Bridge could attract the Ox.
Of course, the Englishman has rarely been a regular at the Emirates, though he has found himself in the team more as of late. Against the Blues in the Community Shield, he impressed.
Chelsea are short on homegrown players, and the Ox would certainly help fill that quota – but he would offer so much more.
His versatility is very appealing, given that he is able to play at wing-back – much like Victor Moses – whilst he is also efficient in the middle of midfield and on the flanks. Indeed, it is this quality that is likely attracting Antonio Conte to him.
Still, Arsenal will be hesitant to sell, so a move remains some way off.
