The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern were incandescent following their draw with Everton in the Merseyside derby last Sunday…
Jurgen Klopp’s side went into their eagerly-anticipated clash with Everton as hot-favourites after their goal-scoring frenzy in recent weeks, but they failed to match the same level of potency they have demonstrated of late against Sam Allardyce’s side. Liverpool’s Egyptian wizard Mo Salah continued to write his own headlines with a marvellous finish to put Liverpool in-front shortly before the interval. But despite dominating possession in the second half, The Reds conceded a dramatic equaliser in the 77th minute when Wayne Rooney smashed the ball down the centre of Simon Mignolet’s goal from the penalty spot.
Considering Everton were far from their best on the day, Liverpool really ought to have recorded a derby day victory for the home supporters to savour.
On the evidence of Sunday’s performance, Liverpool still have plenty of improving to do if they wish to comfortably finish in the top-four this season.
Liverpool currently sit in 4th place in the league on 30 points after 16 games, but they are only 2 points clear of 7th places Burnley – a fact which indicates the strength of the competition for European football this season.
And The Reds chances of finishing in a Champions League spot could well be shaped by their transfer activity in the January transfer window, as well as the dealings of rival clubs who are vying for a top-four finish.
With that being said, Liverpool should be extremely concerned by reports in The Sun which claim Chelsea are set to rival them for the signature of Monaco’s Thomas Lemar in January in a transfer which could be worth as much as £86 million.
Liverpool have been monitoring the progress of Lemar since the summer transfer window despite strong interest from Arsenal, and it now appears they face even stiffer competition for the French international.
But if Liverpool are to continue to progress under Klopp, signings of Lemar’s calibre will be both necessary and fundamental to compete against the likes of Chelsea and the two Manchester clubs.
Therefore, Klopp and FSG should be preparing to make a statement of intent to their rivals by splashing the cash on Lemar in January, before Chelsea make an approach for Monaco’s prized asset.
