The Football Transfer Tavern is packed to the rafters today as punters enjoy the last weekend before Christmas.
Discussion in the bar has turned to the latest sensational reports from the Daily Star who suggest that Chelsea want to beat Arsenal to the signing of Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa.
The Gunners have been strongly linked to the 25-year-old forward with reports suggesting that Arsene Wenger was planning a massive £30 million bid for the Atletico ace during the upcoming January transfer window.
However today’s reports indicate that Jose Mourinho also has the Brazilian-born striker in his sights as his current strikeforce of Fernando Torres, Samuel Eto’o, Demba Ba fail to consistently find their scoring boots.
While long-term target Monaco striker Radamel Falcao is still the prime target for Mourinho, any deal is looking increasingly unlikely as the Ligue 1 club are seeking around £80 million for the player they only signed from Atletico in the summer.
Costa, who was subject of £20 million offer from Liverpool in the summer before signing an extension until 2018, could now be a cheaper option for the Blues after some outstanding performances for Diego Simeone’s side this season.
Chelsea could even consider including youngster Romelu Lukaku in exchange to sweeten the deal with Atletico likely to be desperate to keep hold of their star striker, who has netted 21 times this season.
A reported £32 million release clause that will be active in the summer could certainly make things interesting as the Premier League clubs step up their interest.
