The future of Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke is once again the main topic of conversation in the Football Transfer Tavern after today’s London Evening Standard reports that Chelsea are set to compete with London rivals Tottenham for the Belgian’s signature this summer.
The 22-year-old handed in a transfer request at Aston Villa on Monday and both London-based clubs now want to make the former Genk man their main striking acquisition during the summer transfer window.
Chelsea have already lost out on main forward targets Radamel Falcao and Edinson Cavani and new boss Jose Mourinho has outlined a move for Benteke as he looks to add some power to his current strikeforce.
Tottenham suffered a blow of their own seeing major target David Villa agreeing to a £4.4 million deal to join Atletico Madrid from Barcelona instead of making his expected switch to White Hart Lane. Manager Andre Villas-Boas has now targeted a move for Benteke as looks to add competition to his current squad.
Aston Villa have made a statement of intent to keep Benteke at the club by slapping a massive £25 million price tag on the striker they only paid around £7 million for last year. However with both top Premier League sides eager to sign the striker, they could yet be unsuccessful in their attempt to keep him.
Who will land Benteke? Is he worth the £25 million that Villa have valued him at? Let us know your thoughts below.
