The Football Transfer Tavern has erupted this morning after the latest reports from Mirror Football suggest a possible transfer battle between Chelsea and Liverpool.
The paper reports that Blues boss Jose Mourinho is seeking a top class striker in the New Year and has put Atletico Madrid’s Diego Costa high on his wishlist.
This has angered Liverpool supporters in the bar who were hopeful of landing the 25-year-old after Brendan Rodgers’ failed attempt to lure him to Anfield during the summer.
Mourinho is thought to plotting to sign a new forward in the winter transfer window as he looks to strengthen their assault for the Premier League with summer signing Samuel Eto’o failing to hit the ground running.
However, Blues supporters were offered some encouragement regarding Fernando Torres as he hit two goals during their impressive 3-0 away victory over Schalke last night.
However we wouldn’t be too surprised to see Mourinho move for Costa, who is set to represent Spain at the World Cup despite playing in two friendlies for Brazil previously, and Roman Abramovich will be ready to pay the £35 million asking price set by the La Liga club.
It is possible that the former Real manager will be warned off by the set price, especially given the form of Romelu Lukaku at Everton who has netted four times in his four Premier League appearances for the Toffees.
Atletico have made a superb start to the season and will be desperate to keep hold of their star striker, who only signed new terms at the Vicente Calderon outfit over the summer, ahead of a genuine La Liga title challenge.
