According to The Independent, Ajax striker Luis Suarez is rumoured to be Chelsea’s top transfer target in January, despite manager Carlo Ancelotti’s insistence that he does not need to make any new signings.
Suarez, 22, currently plays for Dutch club Ajax and has been an ever present figure in the English media, with Arsenal and Tottenham having also been linked to the player. However Chelsea are reportedly willing to splash the cash for the Uruguayan in a deal worth £20 million as they look to bolster their squad ahead of a possible summer transfer ban.
Suarez is a left-footed attacking player, able to play both as a striker and as a winger. He could be the ideal addition for Ancelotti as Chelsea see strikers Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou leave for the African Cup of Nations next month. The Uruguayan has been prolific in the Dutch league in recent years and has been especially impressive this year, hitting 23 goals for Ajax so far this term, yet we all know that doesn’t guarantee success in the Premier League. Chelsea also have the added bonus that they would be able to register Suarez for the latter stages of the Champions League, due the Uruguayan only participating in the Europa League.
Ajax have yesterday played down suggestions that Suarez is a serious target for Chelsea yet there is a good possibility that the Blues will act upon their interest soon as they must plan for a worst case scenario in the Gael Kakuta saga.
