Chelsea fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern are in agreement that their side is in desperate need of a defensive re-build; and it looks like they might be getting their wish.
Despite Baba Rahman departing Chelsea earlier this summer on a one-year loan move, there has surprisingly been very little movement from Chelsea’s end over bringing in a replacement.
A purported move for Jonas Hector was reported earlier this summer, but with the young German recently signing a new deal with Cologne, his departure looks unlikely this season.
Our landlord asked the question to the Chelsea fans in the Tavern over who the Blues could bring in, but the general consensus was that there isn’t anybody available that is good enough for The Blues.
Whilst targets may be limited, the Mirror is reporting that Chelsea have identified a potential replacement in Bundesliga star Ricardo Rodriguez.
Rodriguez currently plays for Wolfsburg and is under contract until 2019, but it was reported in June that the defender was keen to leave the club this summer amid suggestions that the defender has a ‘termination clause’ in his contract.
In contrast to the departed Baba Rahman, Rodriguez is particularly proficient defensively, offering strong defensive and aerial qualities – as well as being particularly useful on set pieces.
At just 23-years-old, our landlord reckons Chelsea could have finally found their long term defensive solution that they have lacked since the departure of Ashley Cole.
Chelsea fans – we want to hear from you! What do you make of Rodriguez?
