The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern were pretty disappointed with their side’s lack of transfer activity in January…
The Blues might be flying in the Premier League, but the nature of the English top flight means that anything can happen on a week-by-week basis – and Antonio Conte has got to prepare for that.
That being said, most of the sides around Chelsea in the Premier League didn’t really upgrade either – and so for the most part, it is going to be an even playing field going into the business end of the season.
Chelsea’s lack of business in January doesn’t necessarily mean that the Blues weren’t keeping tabs on any potential signings, though, with Antonio Conte seemingly already looking towards the summer.
According to the Sun, Chelsea are keeping tabs on Marseille midfielder Maxime Lopez, who has enjoyed a breakout campaign in Ligue 1 this season.
He has been a regular for the French side since his debut in November, proving in the process that, despite his age, the midfielder is more than ready for first team football.
A deal for Conte could be realistic, too, with the midfielder’s contract reportedly set to expire at the end of the season.
This report has drawn a mixed response from the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern, with the Blues’ fans questioning why Lopez is needed. After all, Chelsea have a host of young midfielders – such as Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Nathaniel Chalobah – waiting in the wings, leaving little room for Lopez.
Chelsea have, of course, drawn the ire of a lot of football fans lately for their approach to young signings – with the Blues loan army continuing to grow. The system seems to be working, though, as detailed by the impressive profit that Chelsea gained from the sale of Patrick Bamford last month.
Our landlord thinks that if Chelsea can get him cheaply, the deal makes a lot of sense.
