Chelsea knocked back in chase for Serie A striker

Sighs can be heard around the Football Transfer Tavern as a journalist from Italian publication TuttoMercato stopped by to disappoint Chelsea fans detailing that one of their top transfer targets – Edinson Cavani has been slapped with a £77 million price tag by current employers Napoli.

The Blues have long been admirers of the Uruguayan forward who has been nothing short of prolific in recent seasons, and along with Falcao and Hulk, has been on the wish list of both Roman Abramovich and whichever manager has been in the hot seat at the time.

Of course Abramovich is no cheapskate when it comes to spending big on strikers but a £70 million plus fee would surely prove extravagant even for him. Nevertheless, the billionaire Russian owner has previously spent sums that make the Tavern’s tip jar look positively tiny when he sees something he wants.

It is a virtual certainty that the West London club will be buying a striker come January, and with Cavani’s record of 83 goals in 112 games since making the move to Napoli in 2010 – not to mention the performances against Chelsea in Europe – maybe it would not be beyond the realms of possibility for the club to shell out an astronomical amount yet again.

Do you think Cavani is worth so much money or should Chelsea look elsewhere for their goals? Vote in our polls below.
