Chelsea manager Frank Lampard is ready to free up space at Stamford Bridge by letting midfield pair Tiemoue Bakayoko and Danny Drinkwater leave the club.
According to the Daily Mail, Lampard is ready to let both players depart, with the new Chelsea manager looking to promote youth in his squad and give the likes of Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham a chance in the Blues first-team.
Drinkwater has failed to nail down a regular place in the starting XI ever since completing a big-money move from Leicester City, while former Monaco man Bakayoko has done nothing to stake his own claim to a starting berth after enduring a disastrous first year in the Premier League. In the 2017/18 season, he made two errors leading to goals.
Bakayoko subsequently spent last year with AC Milan, and will have been hoping to impress Lampard with the hope of perhaps landing a spot within the first-team once again. However, it looks like Lampard has seen enough already, and has made a big call over two big-money signings.
Indeed, Bakayoko managed only one goal from midfield for Milan last season, while in comparison, youngster Mason Mount fired in an impressive nine goals as he helped Derby County to the Championship play-off final.
Drinkwater meanwhile failed to make a single competitive appearance under Maurizio Sarri, and he’ll be looking to find a club where he can recapture the form he showed during Leicester’s title-winning season, where he racked up an impressive seven assists as he proved the perfect man to feed Jamie Vardy from midfield.
This comes as absolutely no surprise and it’s a wonder that Lampard has taken this long to make such a call.
Drinkwater has never looked like he could command much of a role in SW6 since his move, while Bakayoko has just not done it ever since moving to the club.
If they can recoup some money for the pair, then they will have done well, given they cost around £80m when the Blues did bring them in.
