Chelsea landing star who cost £900k would end Fabregas’ career at Stamford Bridge

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern have mixed opinions about Cesc Fabregas, but recent reports suggest he could be set to depart the club this summer.

It’s fair to say that Fabregas has never quite reached the consistency or quality of form he demonstrated during his career at Arsenal since he moved to Chelsea in 2014. The Spanish play-maker has creativity running through his veins, but he has struggled to translate his spark into goals and assists on a regular basis in recent years.

Now that Fabregas is 31-years-old, it’s likely that the club’s hierarchy will be planning on replacing him in the near future, and recent reports from the Daily Mirror suggest that he could be replaced as early as this summer. The report claims that Chelsea are leading the race to sign Jean Michael-Seri from Nice ahead of competition from Arsenal, although he could cost a whopping £40 million, despite joining the Ligue 1 outfit for just £900k back in 2015.

Although Seri is slightly more defensive-minded than Fabregas, his arrival could eventually force him out of Stamford Bridge as competition for places intensified. With the likes of N’Golo Kante, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Ross Barkley, Danny Drinkwater and Fabregas all on Chelsea’s books, the arrival of another midfield player would force the club to offload at least one of the aforementioned players.

Due to his age and dwindling effectiveness on the field of play, Fabregas would almost certainly be the man to make way. Seri is similar to Fabregas in terms of his technical ability, but he prefers to operate in a slightly deeper role where he can dictate the tempo and utilise his extensive range of passing.

Naturally, the Chelsea supporters will be hoping Fabregas stays at the club this summer, but he is a player who can justifiably demand and expect regular first-team football. Seri’s arrival in West London would force him to play a bit-part role at Stamford Bridge, so there’s no doubt he will decide to embark on a new challenge if Chelsea are successful in their pursuit of one of Europe’s most sought-after talents.
