For the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern, securing defensive depth is vital this summer…
The Blues were able to rely on the same few defenders – the likes of Victor Moses, Gary Cahill and Cesar Azpilicueta – for much of last season, but next year – that isn’t going to work.
Chelsea will be returning to the Champions League, whilst every side around them is improving – meaning they will be under pressure to get even better, and depth will be required as a result.
As such, it is clear that Chelsea need to sign a few more defenders this summer, and according to UOL’s Esporte, they are close to doing just that. Chelsea are said to have agreed a €31 million (£27.6 million) deal for Real Madrid defender Danilo – with Conte clearly looking to increase his options beyond Victor Moses on the right-hand side of the Chelsea defence.
Though not famed for his defensive work rate, Danilo is a stellar attacker, and given Chelsea’s utilisation of attacking wing-backs, a move certainly makes sense. Victor Moses performed in the role admirably last season, but he isn’t a natural in the position – and so Danilo would certainly give Conte more versatility.
His signing would follow that of Antonio Rudiger, who has been Chelsea’s only outfield signing so far this summer. The German is seen as the replacement for John Terry, with Chelsea’s summer spending finally getting underway after weeks of relative calm.
