However that theory is set to be tested as according to the BBC Sport, Lampard is set to move to Manchester City on loan.
Lampard was released this summer after a 13-year spell at the West London club which included 211 goals in 649 matches – making him the club’s all-time record scorer.
Since then the midfielder has signed a deal with new Major League Soccer franchise New York City who are owned by Manchester City.
It is now thought that the former England midfielder will join the Citizens on loan until mid-January before the season in North America kicks off, allowing the 36-year old to keep fit.
But reports suggest that Lampard has only agreed to the move if he can be excused from the squad when Manchester City face his former club this season out of respect for his time at Chelsea.
He could be at the club’s Carrington training ground as early as next week allowing Manuel Pellegrini enough time to evaluate his fitness.
Chelsea fans. Do you wish there was a way you could have kept on to Lampard till January at least? Let us know your thoughts below.
