After another busy weekend of Premier League action in the Football Transfer Tavern, Daniel Jones from the Metro has caused some raised voices this afternoon as he brings news that Chelsea are readying a fresh £35million January offer for Manchester United’s in-form striker Wayne Rooney.
Jones shouts across the bar that Blues boss Jose Mourinho wants to move again for the 28-year-old after he unsuccessfully tried to sign the England international during the summer transfer window.
We had thought that speculation surrounding the forward had died down following his impressive start to the season under new United manager David Moyes with Rooney appearing far happier under his former Everton boss.
However today’s reports indicate that Mourinho still wants to test United’s resolve with only 20-months remaining on Rooney’s existing contract at Old Trafford.
Recent reports have suggested that United want Rooney to stay at the club for the long-term but nothing has been put on the table as yet and that leaves his future at the Red Devils uncertain.
As one punter in the tavern quips signing Rooney would assist Mourinho in his quest to bring the Premier League title back to Stamford Bridge but the question must be asked why would United sell one of their best players to their fierce league rivals? We must admit that it does seem far-fetched but stranger transfers have happened before in the tavern so the report is pinned to the noticeboard for future reference.
